JWU Energy Conservation Office (ECO) saved the university $4 million dollars in cost avoidance over the past four years.
ECO is the sustainability department on campus. JWU formed Eco in 2013 to focus on applying energy-efficient practices throughout both the Downcity and Harborside campuses.
According to Matt Fannon, Energy Conservation Manager, Office of Energy Conservation, “JWU formed its Energy Conservation Office to focus on implementing energy-efficient practices throughout both the Downcity and Harborside campuses. At the same time, to train and aid in the process it was decided to work with an energy conservation consultant, Cenergistic, based out of Dallas Texas. They trained the ECO team on how to do regular audits, create priorities for energy reduction efforts and worked closely with the university throughout the last four years.”
Throughout the years, ECO has been working to make campus more sustainable and energy efficient by working on numerous projects that educate the campus community of ways to lower energy usage. There is updated signage in trash rooms and around campus, new energy efficient equipment, and events on campus such as the recent JWU Sustainability Involvement Fair.
Fannon said, “Since Eco started, there have been numerous successful reduction initiatives done by the Energy Conservation Committee which is made up of multiple members of JWU’s Facilities Department. Some of these include the installation of more than 40,000 LED lightbulbs on campus, scheduling HVAC equipment to run during times when buildings are occupied and distributing over 3,000 energy efficient desk lamps.
Currently, ECO is working to plan recycling competitions between residence halls, distribute 3,000 new energy efficient power strips, along with other initiatives.
